Uptime Kuma alternative

The Uptime Kuma alternative for people who would rather not host their monitor

Everything you self-host Uptime Kuma for (HTTP, TCP, DNS, ping, heartbeat checks, status pages) with nothing to run, plus an agent that says why.

In short

Uptime Kuma is a good self-hosted uptime monitor; the reason to look for an alternative is usually that the box hosting it is the same box that goes down, and that it can only say "down", never why. Opservo runs HTTP, API, TCP, ping, DNS, domain and heartbeat checks from the cloud with public status pages, and its agent explains the cause. Uptime checks are free.

Why people look

Why teams look for a Uptime Kuma alternative

You host the thing that watches your hosts

If Uptime Kuma runs on your own VPS, a provider outage, a full disk or a bad deploy can take down the monitor and the site together, and nobody gets paged.

It knows "down", not "why"

An external check tells you the URL failed. Finding out that PHP-FPM ran out of workers or the disk filled still means SSH-ing in.

No escalation

Notifications go out once. If the person on the other end is asleep, there is no repeat, no rota, no escalation to the next person.

Upgrades and backups are on you

A self-hosted monitor needs updates, a database backup and someone to notice when it stopped running.

Checklist

What to look for in a Uptime Kuma alternative

  • Checks that run from outside your infrastructure, with nothing to host
  • HTTP, API (status and body assertions), TCP, ping, DNS, domain expiry and SSL expiry
  • Cron and job heartbeats for the things that should call in
  • Repeat-until-acknowledged alerts and on-call escalation
  • Public status pages, and ideally the root cause when a check fails

How Opservo fits

How Opservo compares to Uptime Kuma

Opservo includes an external uptime monitor on every plan, including Free: the same check types as Uptime Kuma, cloud-hosted, with SSL and domain expiry, cron heartbeats, SLA tracking and public status pages. The difference is the agent on the server: when a check fails, the incident timeline shows what changed on the box, so "down" comes with "because".

FAQ

Uptime Kuma alternative: common questions

What are the open source uptime monitoring tools?+

Uptime Kuma is the most widely used self-hosted option: free, quick to start with Docker, with HTTP, TCP, ping, DNS and keyword checks and status pages. Gatus suits teams that want checks defined as configuration, and the Prometheus Blackbox Exporter suits teams already on Prometheus. The trade-off is that you host the monitor yourself, and a monitor running on your own infrastructure can go down with it. Opservo runs its checks from its own cloud instead.

Is Opservo uptime monitoring free?+

Yes. External HTTP, API, TCP, ping, DNS and domain checks, SSL-expiry alerts, heartbeat monitors and incident management are included on the Free plan. On-call escalation and public status pages are on Growth and above.

Can Opservo check a private service that is not reachable from the internet?+

Yes. A TCP check can be assigned to an agent, which runs it from inside your network (for example against a private RDS instance) and reports the result on its next heartbeat. This is opt-in per server.

How does Opservo pricing compare to Uptime Kuma?+

Uptime Kuma is free software that you host and maintain. Opservo is free for 2 servers, then ₹999 per server per month on Growth or ₹799 per server per month on Agency with a 10-server minimum; users and log volume never change the price.

Do I have to install the agent to use uptime checks?+

No. Uptime monitors and status pages work with no agent at all. The agent adds the "why" and the fix when a check fails.
