Prometheus alternative

The Prometheus alternative for small teams who need the answers, not the metrics platform

Looking for a Prometheus alternative? What running it really costs a small team, what to look for instead, and how Opservo gives the answers without PromQL.

In short

Prometheus is the standard for collecting and querying metrics, and the usual reason to look for an alternative is that it is a platform to run, not a product to use: exporters per service, scrape configs, PromQL, Alertmanager rules, storage and retention are all yours. Opservo installs in one command and turns the same server facts into a health score, the cause in plain English and the fix. Free for 2 servers.

Why people look

Why teams look for a Prometheus alternative

Running it is a job

Prometheus itself is one binary, but production Prometheus is node_exporter on every host, an exporter per database, Alertmanager, long-term storage or a remote-write target, retention and disk sizing, high availability, and Grafana in front. For a team without an SRE, that stack is the thing that needs monitoring.

A metric is not an answer

node_memory_MemAvailable_bytes tells you the number. It does not tell you that a PM2 worker has been leaking since the Tuesday deploy, or that the fix is one restart and a dependency pin.

You author every alert

Prometheus alerts are PromQL expressions you write, tune and keep quiet. Disk-will-fill-in-3-days, a certificate expiring, a failed systemd unit, a crash-looping container: each one is a rule somebody has to write and own.

Only metrics

Logs, security posture, open ports, pending security updates, certificate expiry, what changed before an incident, uptime from outside and on-call are all other tools (Loki, Blackbox, Alertmanager routing, something for security), each with its own setup.

Checklist

What to look for in a Prometheus alternative

  • One install per server that discovers services, containers, logs and ports without exporters or scrape configs
  • Alerts that come built in and learn each server’s normal, so you tune exceptions instead of writing rules
  • The cause and the fix stated in a sentence, with the evidence underneath
  • Logs, security, certificates, changes and external uptime in the same place as the metrics
  • A way to keep Prometheus or Grafana where you already use them: a metrics endpoint and a Grafana data source

How Opservo fits

How Opservo compares to Prometheus

Opservo replaces Prometheus for the team whose goal is "know what is broken and fix it", not "own a time-series platform". Every server fact becomes a 0–100 health score with a named rule per point, findings in plain English and the command that fixes each one; alerts correlate so a full disk is one alert, not five. It is not a PromQL engine and does not store arbitrary custom metrics. If you keep Prometheus or Grafana, Opservo exposes a Prometheus-format endpoint for its metric catalogue and ships a Grafana data source, so the two coexist.

FAQ

Prometheus alternative: common questions

Is Opservo open source like Prometheus?+

No. Opservo is a managed service with a free tier for 2 servers. The agent binary is downloaded from the API with Ed25519-signed updates; its source is published on GitHub, but the service itself is hosted.

Can I keep Prometheus or Grafana and add Opservo?+

Yes. Opservo serves its metrics in Prometheus exposition format at an authenticated endpoint you can scrape, and there is an Opservo data source plugin for Grafana. Many teams keep their dashboards and use Opservo for the daily "what needs attention" answer and the fixes.

What about managed Prometheus (Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, Google Cloud Managed Prometheus, Grafana Cloud)?+

A managed service removes storage, retention and high availability from your plate. The exporters, scrape configuration, PromQL, dashboards and every alert rule are still yours to write and maintain, and the bill grows with series and samples. Opservo removes the whole authoring layer instead: there is nothing to configure and the alerts are built in.

Does Opservo support PromQL or custom application metrics?+

No. Opservo collects a fixed catalogue of server, service, container, database, log, security and uptime facts and interprets them. If your core need is custom business metrics with your own queries, Prometheus is the right tool; the fit here is infrastructure operations.

How does Opservo pricing compare to Prometheus?+

Prometheus is free software; the cost is the servers it runs on and the time to run it. Opservo is free for 2 servers, then ₹999 per server per month on Growth or ₹799 per server per month on Agency with a 10-server minimum; users and log volume never change the price.
